Movie Review: In the Blood

Columbian-American actor Carlos Alberto Valencia

Although Carlos Alberto Valencia played a "supporting" role, I thought I'd post a current picture of this up and coming actor and a link to his blog. Yes, this departs from my custom of putting the film poster first with a brief description of the plot, but I really felt moved to put this information first.

Okay, so this movie ended up on my list. I don't know. Lou Peterson's In the Blood. I think he did a really good job trying to make this a true horror flick. Very good! I hope some of the brilliant filmmakers like Lex Bonife consider breaking into the horror flick genre. I think there's a market for these kinds of films. It's nice to have the bad guy be a straight guy and the gay guy not be the first one slashed.

Yes, that's Carlos's hand.

Okay, so what is In the Blood. It's a horror flick about a senior in college exploring his same-sex feelings with Carlos Alberto Valencia's character, who is a down-to-earth escort. I think he actually plays a positive shadow figure to the main character -- as we brown men always seem to be to the young rich white man. Anyhow, I think the first 30 minutes could have been executed differently and I would have worked out some of the family stuff a little more. The trigger for the psychic thing made it a little humorous

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL
CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND
SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY
SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM
ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND
THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN

A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.

EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

1105 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010

MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

Sexploitation Case Update

Anthony Stancl, then 17, used facebook and posed as a girl to get classmates, ages 15 to 17, to handover nude photos of themselves. He then used the photos and the threat of publicizing them to get them to have sex with him. Stancl was sentenced to 15 years in prison primarily for being a gay man. Feel free to read the original blog here.

Los Angeles Times included a video in their article. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's article has a more comprehensive article of the court proceeding and background information.

Movie Review: The Hanging Garden

This is one of those movies that I'm just not sure how it ended up on my list of movies-to-be-watched. This movie is a Canadian version of returning to your childhood and thinking about how things might have been.

The main character Sweet William returns home to his sister's wedding after ten years of being away -- running away as an unhappy gay teen who was morbidly obese. Now he is a fit young upstart and he comes home to face the demons and even wanders in fantasies over alternative realities to what life might have been about had he made different choices at the ripe age of 15.

I resonated the most with an evening encounter with his high school crush. When he was 15 they started to fool around only to be caught by his grandmother. After that the crush never spoke to him again. Now, at a svelte and successful 25 years old, his crush trapped in a dead-end marriage with child, wants to make love. That scene really is an expression of the truth of duration!

Anyways, this is one to watch if you have the time.

Movie Review: Forgive and Forget

Yes, the main character closeted gay guy is very handsome. But he's also a good actor and does a great job conveying the complicated life of being a working class homo in a post industrial society. Without spoiling the ending for you -- although better not to read on if you are prone to intuitive self-spoiling --- it's ending was refreshing and unexpected. In fact, I suspect the ending made the movie even that much better. The story is short and to the point: David has hid his sexual orientation very well from friends and family but it all starts to come undone when his best friend (and secret crush) moves in with her long term steady. It had just the right amount of tragedy and reality. One other lesson, it may not be necessary to come out to the world, and your best friend/secret crush on national talk shore television.

There really isn't much to say. Just watch it.

Herbs

If you were my son, I would be extremely proud of you.

If you were my nobyo, I would be very lucky.

If you were my uncle, I would look up to.

And if you were my Congressman, I would beg you for pork barrel.

You are a special individual, Herbs, and you have a destiny.
I am happy that our paths have crossed.
Don't forget us and always use condoms!

Movie Review: A Single Man

I had heard about award nominations A Single Man got but had read no real reviews. We went to see it. The suffering of surviving the death of a loved one is a universal phenomenon. This movie is about one such person -- the everyman who happens to be gay. Firth does such a good job at this, I was at the edge of my seat all the way until the end. I'm not going to spoil the movie in any way so I will talk about themes in a stream of consciousness sort of way.

Professor Falconer, Firth's character, was about the same age as my great-grandfather who himself was a French literature professor in the same era. He was married with step-children (my grandfather among them). In the presence of death, around Colin Firth is life -- tremendous life -- and was. How was life really during that time? How did my great grandfather deal with life and death then? The more I thought about it, the more distant and inaccessible the reality of my great-grandfather's life became.

And then, a young 20-something year-old appeared. Just a few years younger than my grandfather. Would I have been friends with my grandfather? Would I have communed in the same circles as my grandfather? My grandmother?

I am a product of a time in which my existence could not have existed -- the accumulation of material that is inseparable from duration. And there, a single man suffers a death before my eyes. Birth, old age, sickness and death. The waves of karmic existence march forward.

Movie Review: Sin Destino

Okay. The story behind this film is interesting, sad tragic fairytale story. I just don't know if it needed 90 minutes to tell it. I also wanted to vomit after the movie so the warning: "Note: Contains nudity and violence" should have been written: "Note: Contains pederasty and heavy drug addiction" The nudity and violence was actually quite mild compared to the pederasty and the heavy drug use.

Unless you really want to get a feel for how tragic life is when one is poor, orphaned, sexually molested and drugged out, I'd stay away from this movie. Sometimes the darkness of life needs a little levity and this movie has none.

Movie Review: I Think I Do

What a fun little movie! For some reason, when I was a teenager and this movie came out, I simply just ignored it -- along with Six Degrees of Separation. And what a mistake I made. It really has most of the elements of an American 1930s styled screwball comedy. And yet, I don't know if fifteen years ago, I would have appreciated the underlying conflict of the story:

A guy goes to his college friend's wedding (his entire college barkada also attend) and he brings his fiance who is a minor TV actor. As it turns out, he had a major crush on his college roommate (part of his barkada) and they seemed -- in the flashbacks -- to have some kind of chemical reaction going on although his roommate rejected the matter every time it threatened to become open or conscious.

So there they are, in the process of watching another pair of the college barkada getting married. One of the highlights of the movie for me, in terms of comic style, was when the roommate was assigned to give read during the liturgy of the word portions of the wedding mass from the Book of John, and inserts some meaningful to the barkada romantic passage from a novel. The roommate then ends his reading from this novel with "The Gospel of the Lord" and the entire congregation, including the priest respond, "Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ" -- while everyone was half looking at each other to see whether what they were doing was okay.

In any event, its a lighthearted screwball comedy that would be perfect a date-at-home kind of night. Two thumbs up.

Oh and did I mention that gay Cuban actor, Guillermo Diaz plays a very playful, sexually active straight guy in the movie? Very funny.

Movie Review: Vereda Tropical

I really had never heard of Manuel Puig and yet, I have heard of his work. This was long on my list to watch, only because it had been recommended by a computer algorithm that determined I'd like it 3.5 out of 5.

So let me tell you about Manuel Puig. Born in Argentina. He traveled a bit and moved to Brazil. He left permanently in the early 1970s seeing the rise of right-wing Peronista nut-jobs and dictators on the horizon. He apparently spent some time in Brazil just before heading off the Mexico. This story takes place in that small period. Because he was able to foresee the persecution and escape the evil before it had ascending into a ruling, autonomous position within Argentinian society, we don't get the literary torture that Reinaldo Arenas' life showed in Before Night Falls. In fact, until I read some reviews of the movie and his life, I saw the movie as depressing and aimless.

Having read more about his life, I now see that in fact, something went terribly wrong in his life when he left Argentina. His work lost its life. And unfortunately for Puig, "no claims were ever made that the angel [who came for Jacob], too came away with a limp." Jung (MDR 344)

And unfortunately I didn't like the movie because I didn't find anything redeeming or forewarning about Puig's life -- or lack thereof. "I cannot blame the person who takes to his heels at once. But neither can I approve his finding merit in his weakness and cowardice. Since my contempt can do him no further harm, I may as well say that I find nothing praiseworthy about such capitulations." (MDR 345)

Puig wrote Kiss of the Spiderwoman among other works. If you are a Puig fan or are interested in modern Latin-American literature, this movie is worth watching.

Boa Sr dead at 85

The BBC reported today that Boa Sr died in her native Andaman Islands at the age of 85. You may not have heard of Boa Sr. She was the last of her aeta tribe in her native Andaman Islands. She has held this distinction of being the Bo language's last speaker for the last 40 years since her parents died.

(Boa Sr with Anvita Abbi)

She spoke Bo, a language that scientists believe is about 70,000 years old, and was a close cousin to the pre-Austronesian languages of the Aeta, Agta, Ayta, Pygmies, Ita, Baluga, Ati, Dumagat and at least 25 other tribes of the Philippines, the Semang of Malaysia, the Mani of Thailand and 12 other Andamanese tribes.

Her best friend Boro, who was the last speaker of another of the Great Andamanese languages, died last year.

The Sentinelese, another aeta Andaman tribe, pictured above, have rejected any time of relationship with the outside world and have enforced it with the use of shooting arrows and threatening displays of aggression. Scientists believe this xenophobia has prevented disruption of their cultural practices and of contracting fatal diseases that have deciminated Aeta tribes after contact throughout Southeast Asia. (Yes they look friendly here, but apparently that only lasts until you get close enough for arrows to hit you.)

Good bye, Boa Sr
